When can I actually sign up for Medicare?

Most people get a seven-month window around their 65th birthday. It opens three months before your birthday month, includes that month, and closes three months after. If you miss it, there is a General Enrollment Period each year from January 1 to March 31, and late enrollment can mean a permanent penalty on your premium. Still working and covered by an employer plan? The rules are different for you, and that is worth a phone call rather than a guess.

What is the difference between a Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage?

A Medicare Supplement, sometimes called Medigap, sits alongside Original Medicare and helps pay the costs Medicare leaves behind, like deductibles and coinsurance. You keep Original Medicare, and you can generally see any doctor who accepts it.

A Medicare Advantage plan replaces the way you get your Medicare benefits. It bundles them into one plan, often with a network of doctors and hospitals, and frequently includes prescription drug coverage. Neither one is better across the board. Which fits depends on your doctors, your prescriptions, your budget, and how much you travel.

Does it cost me anything to work with you?

No. Our Medicare assistance is completely free. There is no fee for talking to us and no fee for our help choosing a plan.

I already have a plan. Is it worth calling?

Yes. Plans change every year, and so do your prescriptions and your doctors. A plan that fit you three years ago may not fit you now. There is an Annual Enrollment Period each fall, October 15 through December 7, when you can change plans for the coming year. A review costs you nothing, and sometimes the answer is simply that you are already in the right place.

Will I have to switch doctors?

Not necessarily, and this is one of the first things we check. If keeping your doctor matters to you, say so at the start. We will look at whether your doctors are in a given plan's network before you commit to anything.

What is the donut hole?

It is the nickname for the coverage gap in Medicare Part D prescription drug plans. After you and your plan have spent a certain amount on drugs in a year, your share of the cost used to jump before catastrophic coverage kicked in. The rules around it have changed in recent years and continue to change, so what matters is your specific drug list against a specific plan.
